Many are thinking that a fat kid is a healthy kid. Whenever they see plump cheeks and bulging tummies on kids, they’d squeal, “Oh what a cute chubby kid!” But the truth is, having a fat kid is not something to be proud of or to have fun with really. Because if your kid is obese, there’s a wide variety of risks he or she is exposed to.
Some of the complications of obesity on kids include disabling diseases such as heart disease, gall bladder disease, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, not to mention poor self-esteem and depression, which all can continue until adulthood. To avoid or help children get rid of childhood obesity, here are what weight management experts suggest:
Be a good example
For your kid to learn healthy eating habits, your involvement is a must. Show him or her that you eat fruits, vegetables and other healthy food so it will be easier for him to adopt such habit. Oh and if you have a big family, get the whole family involved. Aside from making it easy for your kid to consume only healthy food, this way the whole family benefits from eating healthy food. Make exercise a daily ritual and ditch the couch potato habit.
Exorcise your fridge and pantries
Junk foods such as chips and soda have become more available children today than a few decades ago. The presence of potato chips, chocolates and other fat-laden food in your pantries and fridge encourages your kids to become obese. You’re the parent and you should be in control of what gets in your fridge and eventually in your kids’ mouth. Use your authority wisely to benefit your child’s health. Now if you can’t totally get rid of junk food, do it little by little.
Prepare creative dishes
Kids love colorful and creatively prepared food. Often times, it’s just as easy as carving silly faces on fruits and vegetables. Let them help in preparing meals, too. This way you can introduce them to healthier eating habits because they’re involved in preparing them.
Best portion sizes for kids
It’s not good to make kids always finish the food on their plate IF they’re already full. But how do you know the amount of food that will make your kid full enough?
Just like with adults, kids should only be given food portion sizes that’s just right for their body needs. Check out labels or packages of foods to know the ideal serving portion for your kids. If you want to add some fun in educating your kids about right portions of food, there’s a yoyo way to it .
Avoid drive-thru restaurants or fastfood chains
Many parents use the idea of treating their kids to fast food restaurants as a form of reward or just to avoid cooking. This can make it hard for you kid to lose those unwanted fats. If you don’t enjoy home cooked meals, try to at least find restaurants that serve healthy food, which can dent your budget I must warn.
Other ways to help your kids get through obesity are letting them join weight loss camps, and more drastic methods such as weight loss surgical procedures such as gastric bypass and LAP-band, which should only become last resorts because of their risks such as LAP-band not being advised for people below 18 years of age.
