So you’ve heard about ear stapling and its effect on people who are trying to get rid some pounds or quit smoking? Not yet? Then read on…
Many health experts say that it’s not a weight loss management method that is based on any evidence. However, the owner of The Center Sanctum, Melissa Jones still argues that it’s effective since the stapling presses on the pressure points controlling the appetite and cravings.
Here’s one of Sanctum’s ear stapling customers, Marilyn Fraunfelter, a 72-year-old cancer survivor talking about ear stapling’s help in her weight loss.
Aside from curbing her appetite, Fraunfelter said the stapling has improved her breathing, allowing her to finish a half-hour walk without being out of breath.
“It’s good anytime when you’re my age, and you can get out of bed and do a flower bed,” Fraunfelter said.
The lively brunette said recovering from cancer has made it hard for her to lose weight, but she has had staples in her ears for about four months, causing her to lose about 13 pounds.
Jones said the staples, which are inserted into the cartilage above the ear canal, are effective between 12 and 16 weeks.
Men on average lose between four to 11 pounds per week, and women lose between two to five pounds per week, she said.
The stapling helps patients lose weight 90 percent of the time and stop smoking 85 percent of the time, Jones said.
The procedure cost about $300 and includes weekly monitoring appointments, vitamin supplements, a cleaning kit, diet menus and a food journal, she said.
Ear stapling is like any other weight-loss method in that it has to be maintained, Jones said.
The major risk with the procedure is infection, and much of the procedure’s bad publicity is from patients not being monitored for infections, she said.
Jones said not only is the procedure performed by medical professionals at the Sanctum, but weekly check-ups and a 24-hour emergency line help keep the rate of infection to less than 1 percent.
Although this procedure was already banned in many states, it still is being practiced. Do you use weight loss ear stapling? Is it really effective?
